I have a very small flock of Copper Black Marans chickensthat I have been developing over the last few years. In addition to their fabulously dark eggs, Marans are a very good dual purpose breed, great for homesteads and backyard flocks.

We are getting some beautiful dark eggs this spring that I am very proud of. The chickens conformation is also important to me and I strive for the French Standard - although my chickens have only lightly feathered legs at this point, as opposed to heavily feathered (I don't personally like feathered legs because they get full of mud in the winter, so I have dragged my feet a little in pushing this aspect of my flock!). My Marans come from Wade Jean lines and a few from Ron Presley through breeders such as Donna Gerhke and Linda Hamid who breed these lines - and have added some Jean Davis that will start laying Spring 2012.
